Barton county is a situated in the south west portion of Missouri, between Dade and Crawford counties. I have strong ties to this area of the country, I have a whole slew of ancestors from the area. It is only 13 miles to Cedarville (Dade County), 18 miles to Lamar (Barton County), 37 miles to Joplin and a whopping 60 miles to Springfield (Greene County). There is never a dull moment, unless you really work at it. There is easy access to several Interstates and well paved highways, so getting to any destination is easy, it is the gas that will send you into bankrupcty.

My name is Katy and I'm your county administrator. When I was a child, I was told that I was the recordkeeper, and told stories about the men and women who lived in this area. Some of those stories were sad and others were scary. They were about the border wars and the role that the Hestand's had in them. Others were about hard work and how his grandfather, was a farmer and they worked that place long hours into the evening.

Barton county was created December 12, 1855 from Jasper County. It is named for U.S. Senator David Barton (1783-1837), one of the first senators from Missouri and Lamar is it's county seat.
